BOOKLET 1965
«
Frank Merrick, now (in November 1965) approaching his 80th birthday is bring treated in some quarters merely as a veteran pianist. This does scant justice to either the musician or the man. He is eternally youthful and still retains at this advanced age the form as a pianist for which he was hailed so long ago as 191O as the "master-mind" which appears but seldom an the musical horizon. Moreover, not only is he an outstanding pianist but he is many things besides. First and foremost he is a great humanitarian whose principles are portrayed in his actions in even the smallest matters. As a young man he laboured in the cause of "Womens Suffrage" which he was to nee triumph; in his compassion for the animal world he became and has ever remained a vegetarian; he, with other brave spirits, went to prison for his conscientious objection in the firnt World War and has since always associated himself with various movements aimed at the furtherance of human dignity, such as prison reform and the abolition of the death penalty. Last, but not least, he has been since 1917 a keen Esperantist in furtherance of the cause of Human Brotherhood.

With all these interests in which he has taken an active part, he has pursued his musical life. This has resulted not only in his having held the post of Professor of Pianoforte, first at the Royal Manchester College of Music and later at the Royal College of Music and still holding a similar post at Trinity College of Music but also, and almost miraculously, in his having retained down to this very day his astonishing facility as a pianist.

In the month of November, 1965, Frank Merrick will be giving a recital at Bristol University to celebrate his first recital at the age of nine at Bristol, where he was born and brought up. At that time Paderewski heard him play and on his reconmendation Frank Merrick was taken to study with Leschetizky in Vienna where his fellow pupils included Schnabel and many others who also later made their mark. A bit later he toured Australia and New Zealand with Clara Butt and Kernerley Rumford. There he introduced audiences to the then strange new world of Debussy!

In 191O Frank Merrick took part in the Competition for the Rubinstein Prize in St. Petersburg (now Leningrad), where he gained a Diploma for piano playing and composition. The President of the panel of judges was Glazunov and one of the members was Esipoff.

Frank Merrick is not only a great pianist but also a composer of standing. Apart from many unpublished Works for orchestra, piano and other instruments as well as for unaccompanied choirs, he is the composer of two movements in symphonic form designed as a completion of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. These won a prize in 1928 in the Competition organized by the Columbia Gramophone Company of that day in commemoration of the centenary of Schubert's death. These viere issued an two Columbia 78 r.p.m. records.

Now in this year 1965 the Frank Merrick Society hope to release the firnt Long Playing record of this work, as will be seen from the leaflet enclosed with this issue of "(?)". Esperantists will be particularly interested in the projected issue, also listed in the leaflet, of a record containing Esperanto songs composed by Frank Merrick and splendidly sung by Sybil Michelow, and his 23rd Psalm sung by the London International Choir, another organisation aiming at the furtherance of Human Brotherhood. It is hoped that orders for this record will bring many new members of the Society, who may also wish to purchase other records and become acquainted with Frank Merrickls exceptional playing.

Frank Merrick is a leading authority an John Field. From the early days of 2LO at Savoy Hill he has been a frequent broadcaster and, having broadcast Works by Field, he was chosen to record for Parlophone in 1937 in commemoration of the centenary of Field's death his Sonata in C minor (Op.1 No.3) and Nocturne in A flat. More recently he has edited for Musica Britannica the full scoren of Fields first three concertos, which were printed for the first time by Messrs. Stainer and Bell. He has recorded the second of these an FMS 13, copies of which are still available from the Society.

Frank Merrick is the author of a book entitled "Practising the Piano", published by the Company now known as Barrie and Rockliff. This has had quite a vogue, both here and in the States.

Frank Merrick's position in the musical world is shown by the fact that next year (1966) he succeeds Yehudi Menuhin as President of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

As an Esperantist Frank Merrick has been a familiar figure over the years at many Conferences both at home and abroad when an occasions he has delighted the delegates with his playing, talks, and the performance of his songs.

/P.T.O.

Frank Merrick has been twice married. His first wife was the pianist and composer, Hope Squire, who was his constant companion and helpmate for upwards of 25 years.

By his second marriage to a former pupil, Sybil Case, he has three children. He has four grandchildren.

Finally it may be asked why, in the face of such renown, there should be any need for a Frank Merrick Society. The fact is that whereas perceptive spirits can assess the uniqueness of Frank Merrick's art, the great musical public is not made up of such, for them the authorities, whether in the Concert or the recording world, can but cater, and for the most part what appeals is showmanship and not true art. Frank Merrick is a dedicated artist and an essentially modest man. It was felt a few years ago by a group of friends and admirers of Frank Merrick that posterity should not be deprived of all knowledge of his art. They, therefore, formed the Frank Merrick Society for the purpose of spreading knowledge of this by the issue of records of his performances and his compositions and the promotion of recitals at which these could be heard.
